The road was built in three sections, with the centre section opening last. This was so materials for the centre section could be carried along the existing road. The road was designed and constructed in three sections, with the centre section being the last to be completed, in The horizontal and vertical alignments of this section were dictated by numerous constraints so that the very difficult ground and groundwater conditions present had to be overcome rather than avoided.

This paper describes the ground and groundwater conditions, the problems that these presented and the solutions adopted. Open PDF. Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers -.

One of these junctions is the A and A31 junction in Tongham. This junction is located at the southern end of the Blackwater Valley. It involves the construction of a slip lane for vehicles travelling southbound on the A, wishing to travel eastbound on the A31, removing the need for them to use the roundabout.

The roundabout will be part signalised and incorporate improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, thus supporting vulnerable road users.

The first phase of the improvement works at this junction were completed earlier in the year, this included detailed surveys, clearance works, providing site access and preparation of the compound areas. These works were carried out in advance as the detailed design was being completed and the works planned, it also provided the ideal opportunity to undertake these works with the minimum environmental impact such as not disturbing nesting birds , environmental surveys identified that whilst there weren't any protected species within or immediately adjacent to the site, however animal tracks including badgers had been identified nearby so protection works were also installed to prevent badgers creating new setts within the site area.
