What type of music is chromeo
When balearic disco was blowing up, we put our Night by Night, with a raging guitar solo. And then a bunch of recent stuff. The Weeknd. Drake too. Our Canadian homies right there. So many always ask us. Two opposite facets that make for a balanced intellectual and artistic life. Who are some of the artists that you are currently listening to that we should check out?

Until the last album it was kind of like, not a hobby, but, you know, percent serious involvement. This was like percent. Dave put his PhD on the side for three years, no teaching, no flying back and forth.
I moved to New York, that was a big step. DAVE 1: And it was every day, full-time. But I think it's also, we felt like we had a bit of a chip on our shoulder because after three albums, we still had something to prove. To our fans, we wanted to prove to them that we wouldn't stagnate and, we could take them somewhere else and start a new chapter. We wanted to kind of make it exciting for them again, and I think we did, just by seeing the tweets and the online — we galvanized our fanbase.
And then we felt like some critics were still reluctant to take us seriously, so the best thing we could do was challenge ourselves and say, "All right, we're going to work even harder, and hopefully it's going to show.
We could have been a fucking novelty band. We could have been the biggest novelty band. This is just the beginning of Chromeo 2. With us, at first, we listen to old music. I was reading the Nile Rodgers book. It's not as good as the Keith Richards book, but still good. And Rodgers explains a lot of his guitar chops in it. The first song that we demoed for this record was "Hard to Say No.
We dissect the records, learn the theory, what tics they have. The production we tailor and try to make more modern. DAVE 1: We both write everything together, it's so symbiotic, if you pick it apart. If I start with a song, I'll probably just have some chords and like a drum beat. And then P will take that and add layers to the chords and add layers to the drums to give it substance. Because I don't know the synthesizers well enough.
DAVE 1: Then we go into a whole other phase, overdubs. We go to another studio. We went to the city at the Cutting Room [in New York City], and we did vocals, guitar solos, other synth flourishes. We still do it old-school.
They would add other layers to what we did. I would call it optimizing. Let's say a song like "Sexy Socialite" : "Let's just optimize those drums a little bit. But then there are other tracks like "Old 45's" — that's an Oliver song that I just picked and we all reworked it together and made it a Chromeo song.
Dude, those guys are really on our wavelength. All four of us are hip-hop and funk dudes, so we all love the same shit. It was great to have them. We opened up the studio a lot.
Everybody was giving their advice. It was amazing. We'd come back to New York and re-finish it. And then I mixed it in London [laughs]. It's pretty dizzying what we did on this record. I mean, you read the credits on each song. It's not quite like a Kanye West record, but there's a lot. He worked with Peter Gabriel, did a bunch of that beautiful '80s British synth-y stuff.
Then for mastering, we went with the guy who mastered the Disclosure record, Settle [Stuart Hawkes].
